All that remains to be seen now are the outline of the fort in broken walls and a couple of ruined wells and cisterns.
But you don¡¯t come to a fort like this to look at the pile of old stones, strewn across the wadi bottom ¨C even though some of those stones have evocative inscriptions and even though you may well be one of only a handful of people to have stepped over the threshold in centuries.
No, you come to a castle like this to enjoy the excuse it provides to encounter the desert.
It¡¯s probably fair to say that you¡¯ll never find it without help (in researching this chapter, a Bedouin sheikh and a police escort helped us locate the pile of greyish ruins on a small tell about 8km southwest of Shaumari).
A 4WD isn¡¯t strictly necessary as the gravel plain is firm and when it stops being firm, you can get out and walk the last 500m.
A shallow wadi runs alongside the fort, home to stunted tamarisk trees and shrubs of stick-tight (a type of herb).
From the top of the ruins, a vast sky opens up across the almost entirely flat horizon.
The silence is almost audible as the nothingness pulses in your ears.
This is why you attempt a visit to a castle like Qasr ¡®Uweinid, to experience the absence of all the usual clutter and noise.
If you don¡¯t find it, it doesn¡¯t matter, but you will have gained a greater understanding of why for centuries visitors have been beguiled by the desert, sand or no sand! Qusayr Amra One of the best-preserved desert buildings of the Umayyads, the Unesco World Heritage site of Qusayr Amra is the highlight of a trip into the Eastern Desert.
Part of a much greater complex that served as a caravanserai, bathhouse and hunting lodge, the qusayr (little castle) is famous for its rather risqu¨¦ 8th-century frescoes of wine, women and wild times.
Today Qusayr Amra appears randomly rooted on the parched desert plain, but in ancient times the site was carefully chosen for its proximity to a lush wadi famed for its wild pistachio trees.
The bathhouse was supplied with underground water, tapped from the water table, which lay closer to the surface in former centuries.
This potable water was accessed by deep, masonry-clad wells ¨C one of which can still be seen at the site a few metres north of the main building.
Adjacent to this 36m-deep well a restored saqiyah (a contraption activated by the circular pacing of a donkey), shows how the water would have been pumped to a cistern diverted either to the baths or to be siphoned off and traded to passing caravans.
The main three-vaulted structure is well-restored but what would otherwise be a fairly modest site is made remarkable by the high state of preservation of the floor-to-ceiling frescoes decorating the interior of Qusayr Amra.
An impressive restoration effort has returned much of the vividness of colour to the bacchanalian scenes of hunting, nude bathing and revelry.
History The Umayyads built Qusayr Amra around AD 711 during the reign of Walid I (AD 705¨C15).
Walid is most famous for launching a building campaign across the Umayyad empire that was crowned by the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus and the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem.
In contrast to the religious solemnity of these grand projects, the bathhouse at Amra is devoted to more carnal subjects.
Mind you, this is no Pompeii ¨C a bared breast is about as daring as it gets.
Walid¡¯s disapproving successor ordered the destruction of all such imagery.
Fortunately for Amra, the far-reaching hand of Damascus spared this remote outpost of the Eastern Desert, allowing the modern visitor to appreciate a humour not normally associated with the early expressions of Islamic society.
Excavation at the site began in the mid-1970s under a team of Spanish archaeologists, and the frescoes were restored with funding from Austria, France and Spain.
In 1985, the frescoes were formally recognised as a ¡®masterpiece of human creative genius¡¯ and Qusayr Amra became a World Heritage site.
Sights Walking downhill from the visitors centre towards the modest little structure, it¡¯s hard not to wonder what all the fuss is about.
Even entering the main building into the audience hall, where meetings, parties, exhibitions and meals were once held, is decidedly underwhelming as the searing light of the surrounding desert all but obliterates the frescoes within.
But then your eyes grow accustomed to the light and you are greeted by two bare-breasted women painted on the arches, holding bowls of food (or money) against a blue background, draped in richly detailed cloth.
Five centuries before the Early Renaissance in Europe, these frescoes depict a touchingly human quality ¨C wrestlers warm up before the contest, a woman dressed in a mere strip of cloth bathes without coyness in a hinted patch of sunlight, the ear of a gazelle twitches as the herd surges ahead of the hunt, dogs pant as they race across the west wall, driving wild onagers into a trap of nets.
Even the mundane construction of the baths is immortalised in the frescoes ¨C in the compartmentalised images on the ceiling, depicting quarrying, moving the stones by camel, carpentry and plastering of the walls.
These are not the normal stylised images of the day, belonging to a religious canon of signs and symbols.
Instead they appear to be a unique attempt to capture daily reality ¨C quite unlike the geometric imagery that has come to be associated with early Islamic art.
That¡¯s not to say the frescoes fail to pay homage to more weighty subject matter.
Look for the defaced image of the Umayyad caliph and you¡¯ll see he is surrounded by six great rulers, four of whom have been identified ¨C Caesar, a Byzantine emperor; the Visigoth king, Roderick; the Persian emperor, Chosroes; and the Negus of Abyssinia.
The fresco either implies that the Umayyad ruler was their equal or better, or it is simply a pictorial list of Islam¡¯s enemies.
And if the frescoes pay lip service to concerning matters of the day, they also encompass their own mostly-forgotten symbolism too.
A small doorway leads to the left through the three small rooms that made up the baths.
The apodyterium (changing room) has three blackened faces on the ceiling, said to depict the three stages of man¡¯s life.
Local Christians believe the central figure to be a depiction of Christ.
The left wall has a hallucinogenic painting of an exuberant bear playing the banjo, egged on by an applauding monkey which no doubt would have suggested some political vanity of the day.
In the tepidarium (where warm water was offered and warm air circulated beneath the floor) naked women bathe a child while in the neighbouring hot- water calidarium, which is closest to the furnace outside, a whole Dome of Heaven spirals around the ceiling.
This map of the northern hemisphere sky, accompanied by the signs of the zodiac, is among the earliest known attempts to represent the universe on anything other than a flat surface.
Centaur-like Sagittarius, the Great Bear and several other zodiac signs (see the map in the visitor centre for details) would have been a fitting ultimate subject of contemplation for contemporary bathers.
THE FRESCOES OF QUSAYR AMRA The information boards in the visitor centre at Qusayr Amra assure the visitor that: ¡®None of the paintings of Qusayr Amra portray scenes of unbridled loose-living or carryings-on¡¯.
Given the context of early Islam¡¯s prohibition
