Sleeping & Eating Few people choose to stay in town unless they get stuck, though it’s hard to see how you could get stuck here.
The following are out on beautiful Pantai Sumur Tiga, 5km east of town.
Casa Nemo $$ LODGE ( 0812 1735 4141; www.casanemo.com; Pantai Sumur Tiga; r 150,000Rp, cottage weekday 275,000-300,000Rp, cottage weekend 300,000- 350,000Rp) Sitting on the balcony of your luxurious beach hut (which in some cases comes complete with a stone bath) and looking down on a day-glow blue ocean, you’ll probably find it impossible to wipe the smile off your face.
Freddies $$ LODGE ( 081 3602 5501; www.santai-sabang.com; Pantai Sumur Tiga; cottage weekday 240,000-265,000Rp, weekend 290,000-305,000Rp) This delightful option (although with slightly disappointing bathrooms) overlooks a pretty stretch of white-sand beach with a coral reef, perfect for those content with snorkelling and lolling under a palm tree.
The list of alcohol is impressive and all food is cooked by Freddie, the South African owner.
Information The BRI bank (Jl Perdagangan) has an ATM, as do a couple of other banks.
GAPANG Occupying a sandy cove, Gapang is a lazy stretch of beach lined with shack restaurants and simple guesthouses.
The locals are friendly and the atmosphere is low-key and quiet, with dive chat dominating the evenings.
Sleeping & Eating Gapang is much less lively than nearby Iboih and by and large the accommodation is, except for one notable exception, pretty down at heel.
There are a number of mediocre beach huts available for rent at the far end of the beach.
All cost around 50,000Rp per night and there’s virtually nothing to distinguish one from the other – in fact it’s hard to tell where one set begins and another ends or what any of them are called.
Beachside cafes serving very standard Western and Indonesian food absorb the evening breezes and postdive appetites.
Mama Donut is a local institution, walking the sand selling delicious vegetable samosas, doughnuts and fried bananas.
Lumba Lumba $$ RESORT ( 332 4133; www.lumbalumba.com/staying.
html; r without bathroom 12, r with bathroom 18-30; ) Dutch-owned Lumba Lumba has wood-decked cottages with tiled rooms and Western toilets, and offers easily the best- quality accommodation in Gapang.
Accommodation is for the exclusive use of those diving with this outfit, but it will happily rent out any spare rooms.
IBOIH More spread out than Gapang, Iboih ( ee -boh) follows a rocky headland with a string of simple bungalows along a woodsy footpath.
A small path leads through a stone gateway past the village well, and up and over a small hill to the bungalow strip.
Opposite Iboih, 100m offshore, is Pulau Rubiah , a densely forested island surrounded by spectacular coral reefs known as the Sea Garden .
It is a favourite snorkelling and diving spot.
The coral has been destroyed in places but there is still plenty to see, including turtles, manta ray, lionfish, tigerfish and occasional sharks.
If you are a strong swimmer it is possible to make your own way there.
Beware of strong currents, especially at the southern tip of the island.
Adjacent to the Sea Garden is the Iboih Forest nature reserve .
It has some good walks, and coastal caves that can be explored by boat.
Sleeping & Eating Iboih, with its simple palm-thatch bungalows, many built on stilts and overhanging crystal-clear water, is Pulau Weh’s backpacker hang-out par excellence.
There are dozens of different places to stay with almost nothing differentiating them.
Wherever you choose to hang your flip-flops, if you stay for several days you can normally negotiate a discount on the daily rates that can see prices falling as low as 50,000Rp.
Just off the main road are a few shops selling sundries, Indonesian lunches and coffee in front of a small beach.
The following bungalows are listed in geographic order as you’ll approach them.
Green House $ HUT ( 0852 7748 3299; r 100,000Rp) One of the first places you come to and no different to any of the others except that you needn’t carry your bags far.
Olala $ HUT (r 50,000-150,000Rp) Of the many places offering cheap and cheerful beach huts, Olala is the current flavour of the month.
And talking of flavours, its restaurant (open to all) receives an equal amount of praise.
OONG’s Bunglalows $ HUT ( 0813 6070 0150; r 50,000-120,000Rp) Good value rooms although the tin roof gets things hot.
Cheaper options share bathrooms.
Iboih Inn $$ HUT ( 0812 6904 8397; www.iboihinn.com; r with breakfast 150,000-350,000Rp; ) The top-dog rooms here come with hot-water showers, air-con and fab sea views and are aimed very much at backpackers who are now too old and tiered to backpack.
Room price and quality then drops downward until you get to simple wooden shacks with thin partitioning walls ideal for backpackers filled with youthful zeal.
Yulia’s $ HUT ( 0821 6856 4383; r with/without bathroom 200,000/100,000Rp; ) A 500m trudge over the cliffs rewards you with the best of Iboih’s huts, some excellent front-door snorkelling and a good restaurant with shakes and light fare.
Mama’s $ INTERNATIONAL (mains 25,000Rp) Located on the little beach in front of Rubiah Tirta Divers, Mama’s serves what many would consider the best food in the village and no matter the time of day there’s always a crowd of travellers hanging out here.
Norma’s $ INTERNATIONAL (mains 25,000Rp) The restaurant portion of OONG’s Bungalows does a nightly seafood dinner around a communal table and serves beer amid scuba chat.
LONG ANGEN This secluded beach on the western side of the island is ideally located for spectacular sunsets.
The beach itself only exists for six months of the year – the sand is swept away by the sea from November to May.
Aceh’s West Coast Rounding the northwestern tip of Sumatra’s finger of land is a string of little villages and endless beaches backed by densely forested hills, home to some interesting wildlife, including tigers and bears.
This is the perfect recipe for paradise, but several factors have conspired to keep the sands free of beach blankets: the sheer remoteness of the region, the unstable safety situation during the war in Aceh and the Boxing Day tsunami.
Most of the houses along the coast are identical in design, having been rebuilt after villages were destroyed in 2004.
For the moment, the attractive west coast attracts only the more intrepid travellers and surfers in search of waves.
LHOK NGA & LAMPU’UK 0656 Before the tsunami this area was a favourite spot of intrepid surfers and weekending locals from Banda Aceh.
These coastal weekend spots, only 17km from Banda Aceh, were levelled by the tsunami.
In Lampu’uk (population 1000) the wave travelled some 7km inland, killing four in five people.
There’s still not much in the way of accommodation here, although some of the bungalows along the beach in Lampu’uk are rented out by surfers.
Joel’s Bungalows ( 0813 7528 7765; Lampu’uk; r 100,000-300,000Rp) is the area’s legendary surfer hang-out.
Its huts have been built into and around the cliff face and overlook a drop-dead-gorgeous beach (though dumping shore break can make swimming dangerous).
Rooms come in an array of sizes and styles, some of which have bathrooms that basically meld into the cliff face.
