we now call Jordan? The string of hunting lodges, bathhouses and pleasure palaces known collectively as the ¡®desert castles¡¯ were built by the Umayyads ¨C festive expressions of their creative and exuberant reign Nature Reserves Unlikely as it may seem on the road into the Eastern Desert from Amman, this region is home to three protected areas.
The most developed is Azraq Wetland Reserve , which attracts many bird species around the gravely diminished oasis.
Shaumari Wildlife Reserve protects endangered species such as the Arabian oryx but is currently closed to visitors (though you may be able to arrange a night safari through the RSCN), while Burqu Reserve is as yet an undeveloped site in the middle of remote wilderness.
Dangers & Annoyances The desert doesn¡¯t take prisoners.
At any time of year, but particularly in the middle of summer, dehydration and the threat of heat exhaustion and heat stroke ¨C a serious condition that requires immediate medical attention ¨C are hazards of visiting remote desert locations.
Minimise the risk by carrying and drinking plenty of water, wearing a hat, avoiding exertion in the middle of the day and planning an exit route if travelling by public transport.
If driving off-road, be aware that you will have to be totally self-sufficient in the event of a puncture or mechanical failure.
During the spring, flies and mosquitos are an annoyance.
Bring repellent if visiting the oases.
Getting There & Away The easiest point of entry to the region is Amman and the towns of Zarqa and Mafraj.
Desolate Hwy 5 from the south also leads into the area via Azraq.
The Eastern Desert encompasses the only border crossing with Iraq.
Trucks and some buses use the border crossing at Al Umau with Saudi Arabia (Click here for restrictions).
Getting Around Although minimal and intermittent minibuses ply the route to Azraq from Amman, some en route to the Iraqi border, it is very difficult (and potentially dangerous in summer) to travel around this region by unreliable public transport.
A much better option is to take a tour from the capital, all of which cover the main desert castles in a day trip.
An even better bet is to hire a car for two days, which will allow for a stopover in Azraq and a night safari in Shaumari.
To make a comprehensive tour of the region, including Umm Jimal and Burqu along the remote Eastern Desert Highway, a 4WD with camping gear is highly recommended.
TOURING THE DESERT CASTLES Jumping on an organised tour of the desert castles from Amman makes a lot of sense, especially if you¡¯re short of time or on a tight budget.
Tours can be arranged at the Palace, Farah and Cliff hotels in Amman , which charge about JD15 to JD20 per person for a full-day trip.
You¡¯re unlikely to get a better deal by negotiating directly with the driver of a service taxi or private taxi in Amman, and regular taxi drivers are rarely keen on leaving the city.
Tours can also be arranged from the Black Iris and Mariam hotels in Madaba.
AZRAQ & AROUND Azraq is the only town of any significance in the Eastern Desert and acts as a magnet for trans-continental traffic looking for refreshment and company after long desert drives.
The name ¡®Azraq¡¯ is often loosely applied to all settlements directly east of Amman and the castles that are scattered across the desert plains here.
Some of the best attractions of the region lie close to the town itself, including a fort and a wetland reserve.
Beyond the fringes of the town, on the two main roads into Amman, there are several desert castles, including two of the most striking, Qasr Amra and Qasr Karana.
Azraq is the only place in the whole Eastern Desert where accommodation is available.
To get a real sense of the desert, it is best to plan a trip around an overnight stop that allows at least for a picnic in the wilderness and a walk off- trail between castle-spotting.
The sights here are listed in a logical, clockwise sequence, leaving Amman via Zarqa and following Hwy 30 to Azraq.
The return to Amman is via Hwy 40.
This is the best route on which to visit the castles if you are travelling by public transport (which nonetheless involves some backtracking and taxi rides) and it is the usual route followed by tour companies on their day excursions.
Don¡¯t use up all your energy on the outbound leg as two of the best castles, Qasr Amra and Qasr Kharana, lie along the inbound Hwy 40.
Zarqa 09 / POP 910,800 / ELEV 620M The third-largest city in Jordan after Amman and Irbid, Zarqa is now virtually part of the continuous urban sprawl of northern Amman.
There¡¯s not much to this gritty working-class city that merits anything more than a passing glance, but you may have to change buses here if you¡¯re trying to visit the Eastern Desert on public transport.
In Zarqa, there are two terminals for buses, minibuses and service taxis.
Transport to/from the north bus station (Tabarbour) in Amman (600 fils, 30 minutes) use the New (Amman) station.
From the Old station in Zarqa, there is public transport to smaller villages in the region, such as Hallabat (for Qasr al- Hallabat and Hammam as-Sarah) and Mafraq.
Minibuses also leave intermittently for Azraq (JD1.
200, 1? hours).
Minibuses shuttle between the two terminals in Zarqa every few minutes.
Qasr al-Hallabat With a fair proportion of masonry still standing, some beautifully restored archways and a desolate perch on the edge of the Eastern Desert, this fort (admission free; daylight hr) is an excellent introduction to the fabled desert castles of the region.
Hallabat once boasted elaborate baths, intricate frescoes and mosaics, a mosque and several reservoirs, and served as a focus for a thriving farming community.
Restoration of the site under Spanish direction is helping to restore an inkling of the castle¡¯s former stature although the project is likely to take many years to complete.
As with all the castles in Jordan, it takes a bit of sleuthing to peel back the layers of history.
In the case of Hallabat, you need only focus on three main eras ¨C Roman, Byzantine and Umayyad.
Look first for a fine mosaic.
This sits above a large central cistern and the ruins of the original fort.
Built by the Romans during the reign of Emperor Caracalla (AD 198¨C217), the fort, like many in the region, was originally built as a defence against raiding desert tribes.
As you survey the land from the castle hill, you can see why they picked this location, as it would have been easy to spot men on horseback darting across the rocky plain.
Now look for additions in basaltic rock, easily distinguished by its black colour.
If you venture further into the Eastern Desert you¡¯ll find this volcanic rock scattered across vast plains providing a ready supply of building materials.
In the 6th century the fort was converted by the Byzantines into a monastery for a short period, using the basalt blocks to expand the Roman structure.
Lastly, admire the decorated finesse of limestone walls (distinguished by their white colour), carved niches, reassembled arches and an elaborate porch with pillars.
This is the work of the Umayyads (AD 661¨C750) who revisited the structure under the reign of the hedonistic caliph Walid II and transformed the modest fort into an imposing three-storey complex with four large towers.
Look for the remains of a large mosque with cusped arches, an
