Exploring the scenic back roads to Ajloun (25km) takes a bit of a nose for navigation but is worthwhile for the insights into rural life among the olive groves that it affords.

If you were just about anywhere else on the planet, you¡¯d be surfacing for air at this point.
The town itself is set in a steep-sided, narrow valley.
During Ottoman rule, Salt was the region¡¯s administrative centre, but was passed over as the new capital of Trans-Jordan in favour of Amman.
Consequently, Salt never experienced the intense wave of modernisation that swept across the capital, and as a result has retained much of its historic charm.
Today, much of Salt¡¯s downtown is a living museum of Ottoman-period architecture.
Salt is visited by few foreign tourists, and remains one of the undiscovered highlights of the Jordan Valley area.
A multimillion-dollar aid package awarded to the city in 2004 by Japan has been used to preserve many of the city¡¯s old buildings and to create facilities for tourists.
While infrastructure is still largely lacking, it¡¯s heartening to see that the residents of Salt have embraced their city¡¯s architectural heritage in a country where concrete urbanisation is the norm.
History While you¡¯d be forgiven for thinking that the town was named after the table condiment, Salt was either named after the Greek word saltus meaning ¡®forests¡¯ (although these are long gone), or from sultana for the grapes that were once abundant in the region.
Construction began on Salt¡¯s characteristic limestone buildings in the late 19th century thanks to the arrival of merchants from Nablus.
Over several decades, Salt began to thrive as trade networks sprang up between the city and neighbouring Palestine.
Following the establishment of Trans-Jordan, the new emir chose Amman as his capital due to its proximity to the railway.
Almost overnight, Salt went into decline.
War with Israel separated Salt from the port of Haifa in 1948, and later from its trading partner of Nablus in 1967, ending Salt¡¯s significance as anything more than a rural town above the Jordan Valley.

Few of these gracious limestone buildings are open to the public, but some of the elegant facades are worth viewing.

Salt Archaeological Museum MUSEUM Offline map Google map ( 3555651; admission JD1; 8am-6pm May-Oct, to 4pm Nov-Apr) This delightful little museum is located in a well-restored Ottoman-era building and covers the local history of the Jordan Valley area with excellent information boards in English.
The downstairs rooms focus on glass and pottery (some dating back 5000 years), spanning the Roman, Byzantine and Islamic eras, mostly from around Salt but also from Deir Alla and Tell Nimrin (from where Joshua is thought to have led the Israelites across the River Jordan into the Promised Land).
Upstairs are some examples of local traditional dress, displays on traditional farming activities and mosaic fragments from churches around Salt.
Salt Handicraft Training Centre CRAFT WORKSHOP ( 3550279; Nageb al-Daboor district; 8am-3pm Sun-Thu) Visitors can watch weaving, pottery, mosaics and other handicrafts being made at this women¡¯s cooperative, 3km out of town.
The centre specialises in both training and production and has a showroom for displaying the finished products.
A taxi here costs JD1 to JD2 from the centre; ask for the Balkhar Islamic School (Bejanib Maddaris al-Balkhar al-Islamiy).
The turn-off is at a set of traffic lights by a bridge, 2km from Salt along the road to Amman.
Wadi ash-Shu¡¯aib HIKING If you have a car it¡¯s worth exploring Wadi ash-Shu¡¯aib, a refreshing valley named after the prophet Jethro (¡®Shu¡¯aib¡¯ in Arabic).
There are some hiking opportunities here and interesting caves.

DISCOVERING SALT ON FOOT Salt is one town that really rewards a bit of on-foot exploration as much of the old quarter can only be accessed by stairways and the best of the souq area is clustered into pedestrian-only alleyways.
The following 3km route, which takes about 90 minutes to complete, leads you on a circular tour of Salt¡¯s backstreets, taking in its bazaars and old Ottoman architecture.
From Salt bus station walk up Dayr St, past the impressive doorway of Beit Mismar Offline map Google map and the lovely balcony columns of Beit Muasher Offline map Google map, both grand old Ottoman residences.
Continue along Dayr St as it passes the curved walls of Salt¡¯s Orthodox church to the recently restored Beit Abu Jaber Offline map Google map, which houses a small local-history museum.
Head across the plaza and take the stairs up to the right of the mosque, curving round to the entry of the former English Hospital Offline map Google map (look for the letters ¡®EH¡¯ on the green gate).
From here you can wind your way uphill for fine views over the town and descend along a neighbouring staircase.
Alternatively, return to the plaza and head down Hammam St, Salt¡¯s most atmospheric backstreet, past the ornate Ottoman mosque Offline map Google map to the junction with Maydan St.
Across the street is the colonnaded entry of Muhammed al-Bashir¡¯s House (built between 1890 and 1910), now a traditional coffeehouse (with a tree in front).
Next door is Beit al-Sulibi (built between 1920 and 1930).
Break for lunch at the Al-Salam Restaurant and end your tour at the archaeological museum.
Eating There is nowhere to stay in Salt but there are several unpretentious places to eat.
The northern end of Maydan St is lined with traditional cafes, full of men drinking tea and smoking nargileh.
Basic restaurants along the same street and by the bus station serve kebabs, though the best place in town for Arabic food is the Al-Salam Restaurant Offline map Google map ( 3552115; Maydan St; meals JD3-5; 7am-10.

Information The friendly tourist office ( 3555652; Dayr St; 8am-3pm Sun-Thu) is upstairs in the impressive old residence of Beit Mismar, but catching it open as per the advertised hours is something of an art.
Getting There & Away The bus station is on the main road south of the town centre.
There are minibuses to Salt (800 fils, 45 minutes) from Amman¡¯s North Bus Station, via the University of Jordan, and occasional service taxis from Raghadan.
