975 Twice as much water is pumped from Azraq than the oasis can replenish in order to supply one quarter of Amman’s water demands ? ? 1977 The Jordanian government signed an international wetlands-protection treaty that led to the establishment of the Azraq Wetland Reserve ? ? 1980 Only 10 cu metres per year of water (compared with 3000 cu metres in 1950) fills the wetlands, exacerbated by the sinking of private, illegal wells for farming ? ? 1991 The water table drops to over 10m below the ground, and the wetlands dry up completely ? ? 1994 Funding and commitment from the UN Development Program (UNDP), Jordanian government and RSCN tries to halt the pumping of water from the wetlands to urban centres ? ? Mid-1990s Over-pumping destroys the natural balance between the freshwater aquifer and the underground brine, resulting in brackish water unpalatable for wildlife, and hopeless for drinking and irrigation ? ? 1998 Species of killifish (Aphanius sirhani), a small fish of only 4cm to 5cm in length and unique to Azraq, is brought to the edge of extinction ? ? 2000 On 2 February, only 1200 birds are recorded in the wetlands ? ? 2011 Around 1.
5 million cu metres of fresh water is now being pumped back into the wetlands every year by the Jordanian Ministry of Water ? ? 2015 Projected restoration of about 10% of the wetlands – providing the estimated 500 illegal deep wells operating in the area can be brought under control Azraq Wetland Reserve For several millennia, the Qa’al Azraq (Azraq Basin) comprised a huge area of mudflats, pools and marshlands, which led to the establishment of Azraq as one of the most important oasis towns in the Levant.
Although the basin was declared an ‘internationally important wetland’ by the Jordanian government in 1977, this largely token gesture failed to stop an environmental catastrophe.
To provide fresh drinking water for the burgeoning cities of Amman and Irbid, the wetlands were all but drained by 1991.
In recent years, the RSCN has seized control of the wetlands, and established a small nature reserve ( 3835017; admission JD8.
120; 9am-6pm) to help facilitate the recovery of the wetlands.
Bird populations have returned but the wetlands remain a meagre reflection of their past glory.
An environmental recovery project of this magnitude is certainly worth support, and the on-site visitor centre has well-documented (if tragic) exhibits detailing the history of the basin’s demise.
Sights & Activities The RSCN estimates that about 300 species of resident and migratory birds currently use the wetlands during their winter migration from Europe to Africa.
They include raptors, larks, warblers, finches, harriers, eagles, plovers and ducks.
A few buffaloes also wallow in the marshy environs, and jackals and gerbils are occasionally spotted in the late evening.
The best time to see birdlife is in winter (December to February) and early spring (March and April).
Large flocks of raptors steadily arrive in May.
Ultimately, however, bird populations are dependent on the water levels in the reserve and as the water continues to be pumped out quicker than it is pumped in, the future of the oasis remains in jeopardy.
Marsh Trail HIKING The 1.
5km pathway through the reserve gives an idea of the former beauty of the wetlands.
Take a pair of binoculars and stop at the bird hide to spot ducks squabbling between the seasonal reed beds.
Bring a bird book during migration as all sorts of un?sual species turn up for a drink before heading across the surrounding desert plains.
A viewing platform overlooking the Shishan springs is worth noting: these springs once watered the entire wetlands.
It takes a hard heart not to be moved by the scale of the ecological devastation visited on this former regional wonder.
Information A visitor centre run by the RSCN marks the entrance to the reserve.
It contains an informative interpretation room and it’s hoped the gift shop selling local crafts and artwork will reopen soon.
Getting There & Away The Azraq Wetland Reserve is located 500m east of Azraq and is signposted off the main road.
Shaumari Wildlife Reserve Established in 1975 by the RSCN, this 22 sq km reserve (Mahmiyyat ash- Shaumari; www.rscn.org.
jo; 8am-4pm) was established with the aim of reintroducing wildlife that has disappeared from the region, most notably the highly endangered Arabian oryx.
Despite intense funding hurdles, natural predators and the continuous threat of poaching, oryx, Persian onagers (wild ass), goitered and Dorcas gazelles and blue-necked ostriches have flourished here – a testament to RSCN efforts.
At the time of research, Shaumari Wildlife Reserve remained closed to visitors while it undergoes a radical overhaul.
According to RSCN staff, the new face of Shaumari will be significantly more attractive to visitors.
A night safari may be possible to arrange with advanced booking from the RSCN.
Alternatively, ask at Azraq Lodge for the latest status of the reserve.
The project espouses such a worthy cause that it deserves all the support it can get.
Getting There & Away The turning for Shaumari is well signposted, 7km from the Azraq T-junction, along the road to the Saudi border.
A small potholed road leads a further 6km to the reserve.
The last kilometre is gravel, but is easily manageable in a 2WD.
UNICORNS OF THE DESERT The last time the Arabian oryx was seen in the wild in Jordan was in 1920 when hunting drove this magnificent, straight-horned antelope to local extinction.
In 1972, the last Arabian oryx was killed by hunters in Oman, which led officials to declare the oryx extinct in the wild.
However, in a remarkable conservation effort, the nine oryxes left in captivity (known now as the ‘World Oryx Herd’) were pooled together and taken to the Arizona Zoo for a captive breeding programme.
In 1978, four male and four female oryxes bred in Arizona were transported to Jordan in an effort to help re-establish the country’s wild population.
Under the auspices of the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN), the first calf, Dusha, was born at Shaumari Wildlife Reserve the following year.
Five years later, there were 31 oryxes at Shaumari.
Since then, some have been released into the wild at Wadi Rum – a not altogether successful enterprise.
The next step is to introduce oryx in other protected areas throughout the country.
This has prompted the RSCN to overhaul their facilities at Shaumari significantly in the hopes of attracting greater interest and funding from tourists in their vital conservation project.
The return of the oryx to Jordan was the occasion of great national pride which prompts the question: what is it about this antelope that provokes such emotion? Perhaps it’s the uncanny resemblance of a mature bull, with rapier-like antlers, to the mythical unicorn.
This is not as far-fetched as it seems.
The ancient Egyptians used to bind the antlers of young oryx so they would fuse into one.
Seeing a white, summer-coated herd-bull level up to a rival in profile, it’s easy to confuse fact with fiction.
Qasr ‘Uweinid If you can find this little scrap of history in the middle of the Eastern Desert, you deserve a medal! Once a robust and practical structure, built by the Romans in the 3rd century AD to protect the source of Wadi as-Sirhan (now in Saudi Arabia), this fort was abandoned less than 100
