Feria del Aguacate FOOD The Avocado Fair erupts for three weeks in November/December and is celebrated with agricultural, industrial and handicraft exhibitions. Hotel del Parque HOTEL $ ( 452-524-38-45; Independencia 124; r M$230; ) Of the many bottom-rung places in town, this tidy place, just 70m from the main entrance to the national park, is the pick of the bunch. Casa Chikita GUESTHOUSE $$ ( 452-524-41-74; www.casachikita.com; Carranza 32; s/d incl breakfast M$450/650; ) This 19th-century house has just four rooms set around a garden decorated with local pottery. The rooms vary quite a bit, but the best are extremely comfortable and decorated with great touches such as granite or wooden counters in the bathroom, tiled floors and local art on the walls. Homemade breakfasts are sumptuous, the friendly artist owners will make you feel right at home and you¡¯re also welcome to use the kitchen to make your own meals. The owners aren¡¯t always around so it¡¯s best to call in advance and let them know when you¡¯ll be arriving. Mi Solar Bed & Breakfast BOUTIQUE HOTEL $$ ( 452-524-09-12; www.hotelmisolar.com; Delgado 10; r from M$913; ) Uruapan¡¯s oldest hotel opened in the 1940s to accommodate tourists flooding in to see the newly erupted Volc¨¢n Paricut¨ªn. Today it¡¯s a wholly remodeled boutique place, with 17 spacious rooms on three floors surrounding an atrium bar. Rooms have luscious king beds, high ceilings and hand-carved wooden furniture. Over the road is a newer annex with larger rooms that are very comfortable but lack the character of the main building. The rack rates shown here only apply in busy periods. Expect a 30% discount at all other times. Despite the name breakfast is not always available. Hotel Mansi¨®n del Cupatitzio HOTEL $$$ ( 452-523-20-60; www.mansiondelcupatitzio.com; Calz Rodilla del Diablo 20; s/d from M$1475/1795; ) Enter this beautiful hacienda-style property and you come face-to- face with mounds of flower arrangements, brooding religious art and sparkly balls of roses. It gives off an instant air of calm. This is further enhanced by the carefully tended gardens and beautiful pool. Rooms, though, while perfectly pleasant and comfy, are a bit dowdy in comparison. It¡¯s up by the northern entrance of the Parque Nacional Barranca del Cupatitzio. Eating & Drinking La Lucha CAFE $ ( 452-524-03-75; Ortiz 20; coffees M$30; 9am-9pm) The arched interior of this charming cafe makes for a very pleasant place for a coffee, cake or breakfast, with black-and-white photos on the wall and a great little courtyard out the back. Half the town seems to pile in around late afternoon. Cox-Hanal MEXICAN $ (Carranza 31A; mains M$30-80; 11am-9pm) This simple local place serves up delicious antojitos yucatecos (dishes from the Yucat¨¢n). It¡¯s nothing much to look at, but it¡¯s always busy and the prices are very reasonable. Caf¨¦ Tradicional de Uruapan CAFE $ ( 452-523-56-80; Carranza 5B; snacks & breakfast M$35-100; 8am-11pm) It¡¯s got burgers, salads, massive platters of huevos a la mexicana and all manner of shakes and cakes. Moreover, you can enjoy a very pleasant cafe atmosphere full of locals. Mole Orapondiro MEXICAN $ (Independencia 112; mains M$35-60; 9am-5pm) This sunny cafe specializes in one thing: a rich, thick and chocolatey mole sauce. Local ladies smuggle home bottles of it, so they can pass it off as their own. You can have it ladled over chicken, rice and beans and on tortas. Get here early because the chicken always sells out. Restaurant Plaza Urani FISH $$ (La Terraza de la Trucha; 452-524-86-98; Calz Rodilla del Diablo 13; mains M$65-120; 9am-6pm) Irresistibly nestled at the north entrance of the national park, you¡¯ll find this lazy afternoon restaurant with shady cascade views. Order the trout, of course. Get it grilled, crusted in macadamias or a la tampique?a (with guacamole and beans). It comes with rice and a searing salsa. At the time of research it was operating under two names but Restaurant Plaza Urani is the new name. La Casa PIZZERIA $$ ( 452-524-36-11; Revoluci¨®n 3; mains M$65-200; 2-11pm; ) Easily Uruapan¡¯s most charming spot with low music, low lighting and folk art scattered within its stone walls. The specialty here is pizza, which, while not particularly great, makes for a welcome change from Mexican fare (be careful, some of the ¡®gourmet¡¯ pizzas are very expensive). Shopping Mercado de Antojitos MARKET ( 8am-11pm) The Mercado de Antojitos, on the north side of the plaza, is ideal if you¡¯re in the market for candy, DVDs, strawberries, bras, cowboy boots or a taco. F¨¢brica San Pedro CLOTHING, HOMEWARES (www.turisticasanpedro.com.mx/quienes. html; Trevi?o s/n; 9am-6pm) F¨¢brica San Pedro has exquisite handmade textiles. Mercado de Artesan¨ªas SOUVENIRS ( 9am-6pm) Opposite the entrance to the Parque Nacional Barranca del Cupatitzio, the Mercado de Artesan¨ªas has local crafts, though mostly of a poor quality. La Macadamia FOOD ( 452-523-82-17; Carranza 21; 9am-2pm & 4-7pm Mon-Sat) La Macadamia sells ¨C you guessed it ¨C products made from local macadamia nuts, from delicious macadamia marzipan to macadamia moisturizer.
