Buses to the boat pier (marked ¡®Lago¡¯; M$7, five minutes) also leave from here and run from about 6am to 10pm daily.
Common destinations that have multiple daily services include those in the Buses from P¨¢tzcuaro table (prices quoted are for highest and lowest fares when a choice exists).
BUSES FROM P¨¢TZCUARO DESTINATION FARE DURATION FREQUENCY (M$) (DAILY) Erongar¨ªcuaro 14 35min every 15mins Guadalajara 341 4?hr hourly Mexico City (Terminal 437 5?hr hourly Norte) Mexico City (Terminal 437 5?hr hourly Poniente) Morelia 30-53 1hr every 30min Quiroga 18 35min every 15min Tzintzuntzan 13 20min every 15min Uruapan 58 1hr hourly TOP OF CHAPTER Around P¨¢tzcuaro Lago de P¨¢tzcuaro About 3km north of central P¨¢tzcuaro you will come over a rise to find a lake so blue that its edge blends seamlessly with the sky.
Within it are a few populated islands.
It is stream fed and natural, and though pollution is a concern, it¡¯s still damn beautiful.
To get to the Muelle General, take a bus marked ¡®Lago¡¯ from P¨¢tzcuaro¡¯s Plaza Chica (M$7, five minutes).
The pier caters to tourists in a profoundly cheesy way ¨C with cheap fish eateries and souvenir shops.
The ticket office is about 50m down on the right.
Isla Janitzio is a popular weekend and holiday destination.
It¡¯s heavily devoted to tourism, with lots of low-end souvenir stalls, fish restaurants and drunk college kids on holiday (OK, it¡¯s actually not that nice at all!).
But it is car-free and threaded with footpaths that eventually wind their way to the top of the island, where you¡¯ll find a 40m-high statue (admission M$10) of independence hero Jos¨¦ Mar¨ªa Morelos y Pav¨®n.
Inside the statue are murals depicting Morelos¡¯ life.
Want a stellar panoramic view? Climb up to his see-through wrist.
Round-trip boat rides to Janitzio cost M$50 (free for children under seven years old) and take 25 minutes each way; they leave when full (about every 30 minutes, quicker on Saturday and Sunday).
The last one back is around 8pm.
Lakeside Villages The villages surrounding Lago de P¨¢tzcuaro make perfect day trips from P¨¢tzcuaro and almost all can be reached by local transportation from P¨¢tzcuaro¡¯s bus terminal.
Or, to avoid backtracking to the bus terminal, take a ¡®Lago¡¯ bus from Plaza Chica and get off anywhere between the Posada de don Vasco and Hwy 14; then wait by the roadside for a bus heading to your village.
Buses to Ihuatzio run directly from Plaza Chica.
Frequent combis run between the villages, so you can visit several in one day.
Transportation between Quiroga and Erongar¨ªcuaro is infrequent, however, so travel between the two may be quicker via P¨¢tzcuaro.
IHUATZIO Ihuatzio, 14km from P¨¢tzcuaro, was capital of the Tarascan kingdom after P¨¢tzcuaro (but before Tzintzuntzan).
Today it¡¯s just a slow, dusty village where everyone knows everyone else, until you walk into town.
Ihuatzio archaeological site (adult/child M$35/free; 9am-5pm) is a large and partially restored set of pre-Tarascan ruins, some of which date back as far as AD 900.
The site lies just over 1km up a cobbled road from the village¡¯s small plaza.
The ruins¡¯ best attraction is an open ceremonial space.
It is 200m long and features two pyramid-like structures at its west end.
Two carved stone coyotes were found at the site; one is in the National Anthropology Museum in Mexico City, the other can be found at the Museo Regional Michoacano in Morelia.
Casa Santiago ( 434-344-08-80; www.casasantiagomex.com; r incl breakfast M$720-1080; ) , located 1.
5km west of Ihuatzio on the road to Cucuchucho, is a great base from which to experience a night or two in an indigenous pueblo.
Rooms are of the rustic-chic kind and the owners, a friendly, knowl?edgeable US-Pur¨¦pecha couple, run shopping tours and cook delectable local meals upon request.
It¡¯s best to let them know in advance that you¡¯re coming.
